An amazing illustrated book from one of our grade one students! Multi-cultural day happened on Thursday February 19th. It was over-whelming to see parents, staff and students participate with 8 different cultural stations. Many thanks to everyone who came and helped. These are our Aboriginal and French Canadian stations. We were so lucky to have parents help out everywhere! Here is our Chinese station and Mrs. Bowman at the "Me to We" station. The food, crafts and displays were astounding. Here is the team from India and the Hispanic station. Great Britain had some wonderful displays as did the Korean station who also had clothes for our little girls to try on. Children wrote messages on the hands as to how they could change the world. The Korean students opened the assembly with a Korean song that included fans held by the older children. Mrs. Bulpitt came to spend the day and visited the stations as well as the assembly. We were honoured by having the Aboriginal drummers perform for us. Mexican dancers Maria and Leticia performed two dances. They were fast, colourful and fun! Another wonderful week of learning at Richard Bulpitt Elementary School. Way to go Bulldogs!
On Monday February 2nd, 2015 we started the week of with Groundhog Day! Since it was raining that day, the Groundhog did not see his shadow. Hopefully that means that winter is ending and Spring is on its way. On Monday morning, we also had the "Return It" team come and present at RBES about recycling. As a school, we are trying very hard to recycle our garbage. Students are encouraged to not leave their garbage outside on the fields as well. On Tuesday February 3rd, the whole student community were treated to an Axis theatre production of "Hamelin". There was singing, dancing, music and acting. There was lots of other learning happening in the building as well. It's great to see students exploring other ways of representing their learning! It was a busy day on Tuesday! Mrs. Dubie was helping out with other parents in division1. They were getting ready to create Ukrainian Easter eggs. It was also fruit/veggie day at school. Our primary students received milk and kiwis this month. Thanks Mrs. Friessen for taking this on! Wednesday February 4th was Global Play Day! At RBES we have been actively teaching games to our children on the playground. Thanks to ALL of our supervisors! Kids are learning how to do "chinese skip" and use long and short skipping ropes. Hopscotch, four square and other outside games are important to for children to learn. Inside, children were encouraged in the afternoon to participate in board games as well as create "stuff" to play with. Lots of cardboard, masking tape, duct tape was used to create these wonderful masterpieces from students in buddy classes. Mrs. Cramer's class and Mr. Kroeker's class, buddied up to have their students "play" together. Play is an important part of a students' social and emotional development. On February 5th, students in division 1 hosted a Readers' Theatre afternoon. Who knew that these youngsters had such great acting skills! Well done to all of the actors. Thanks also to parents to come and watch. Students in Mrs. Cramer's class are very happy with their new white boards. Students in Ms. Gard's class are pleased with the new learning environment. Students like working on the ground, lower or higher desks, or even standing while learning. These are all examples of students learning in different environments and in different ways. These are the Ukrainian Easter eggs that students are learning to make. Our cupcake room is a great place for teaching social emotional self-regulation skills to all of our youngsters. It is a great place to chill out, relax and regroup! February 6th in the afternoon was school improvement day at Richard Bulpitt. Students went home early and staff worked in the afternoon on our school action plan. As a staff we also looked at how we can support our vulnerable learners. It is always amazing to work with such a dedicated group of educators. Enjoy the Family day weekend! It was another wonderful week at our school.
Division 1 has been learning about electrical circuits with Ms. Matson. Lots of excited hands on learners were busy with their circuits last week. Everyone got into the action. At school, students have been listening to the Langley Picture book of the Year. "The Most Magnificent Thing" encourages students to create and invent new things. We brainstormed inventions together after listening to this book. In the Learning Commons, "The Book With No Pictures" continues to be a favourite. It is especially fun to see watch students read it to each other. In Kindergarten, Mrs. DeGroot's class was learning about what Bears like. In division 4, students were learning about the art from Ted Harrison. There were some beautiful projects form our students. In our Cupcake 1 room, self-regualtion skills are part of the curriculum. Superflex, the zones of self-regulation as well as learning about appropriate behaviour are topics that Mrs. Powell presents in her social friendship groups. On Friday we said "Goodbye to Pokemon" cards. Students were invited to a Pokemon tournament in the gym at lunch time. Students in k,1 and 2 and older students on grade 3,4 & 5 had the opportunity to trade and "do battle." Students are asked not to bring their cards to school on Monday, but to take advantage of the increasing warmer weather and to play some more active games outside. Another great week at Richard Bulpitt Elementary School.
Last week, students began to listen to the new Langley Picture Books of the Year. When all the nominated books have been read to them, they will have the opportunity to vote on their favourite book. The first title "Dangerously Ever After " is a very popular fractured fairy tale. With the new year, we also started with new classroom monitors. Our grade fives are just an amazing group of responsible young people. We are very proud of them. They lunch hour monitor, assist in the office and bring great leadership to our school. On Tuesdays at lunch time, Mr. Flack has started a chess club with our grades three, fours and fives. It has proven to be very popular and many students are learning how to play this game. They bring their lunch, find a partner and put their minds to work. This week I listened to two of our Reading Recovery Students read their books. They are always so proud when they have accomplished this goal. They work very hard to learn how to decode words and make their reading fluent. It is so important for students to have their work displayed. I love this art work that is in our upstairs hall done in the style of Vincent Van Gogh's "Starry, Starry Night." It is always a treat when our aboriginal presenters come and cook bannock with our youngsters. Always great to see so many parents come and volunteer to help. We are thankful to Mrs. Powell. She has been coming to the kindergarten classrooms and presenting lessons on self-regulation. Optimum learning happens when you are emotionally in the green zone! On January 17th, Ida Yang from division 1 was one of two student performers at TEDxLangleyEd. This event was at the Chief Sepass theatre in Fort Langley. Ida "wowed" the audience with her wonderful performance. Everyone was astounded by her playing. On January 19th, Kindergarten registration started in the Langley school district. We are again anticipating a large number of young people to come to our school in September. In order to be guaranteed a spot in Kindergarten, children have to be registered by March 31st. For the next few weeks, Mrs. Lenko will be teaching divisions 1, 2 and 3 about Reading Power. I think it's important that Principals also teach because it is a great way to get to know the students in the school. Ready Set Learn is also happening for the next four session. This is a free program for children who are entering Kindergarten in September. There is still room if you want to register your child. Just phone the office. Tuesday January 20, 2015 1:30-2:30pm, Rhyming Tuesday February 17, 2015 1:30-2:30pm, 1,2,3 & Other Numbers Tuesday April 21, 2015 1:30-2:30pm, Fine Motor: Learning & Print Tuesday May 19, 2015 1:30-2:30pm, Five Senses Tuesday June 9, 2015 12:30-2:15 pm, “Welcome to Kindergarten” Thanks to our parents who came on Wed. Way to go Division three. Your posters on your math surveys are astounding. Great way to show your learning. Another great couple of days of learning at Richard Bulpitt Elementary School. Before Christmas, there was one day in December when the blue fences were moved around. Our students were so excited because at recess they were able to play on the whole field behind the school. Unfortunately the fences were soon put back up to the disappointment of everyone. We are all hoping that in the Spring we will be able to use the field behind the school.
