Last week, students began to listen to the new Langley Picture Books of the Year. When all the nominated books have been read to them, they will have the opportunity to vote on their favourite book. The first title "Dangerously Ever After " is a very popular fractured fairy tale.
With the new year, we also started with new classroom monitors. Our grade fives are just an amazing group of responsible young people. We are very proud of them. They lunch hour monitor, assist in the office and bring great leadership to our school.

On Tuesdays at lunch time, Mr. Flack has started a chess club with our grades three, fours and fives. It has proven to be very popular and many students are learning how to play this game. They bring their lunch, find a partner and put their minds to work.
This week I listened to two of our Reading Recovery Students read their books. They are always so proud when they have accomplished this goal. They work very hard to learn how to decode words and make their reading fluent.

It is so important for students to have their work displayed. I love this art work that is in our upstairs hall done in the style of Vincent Van Gogh's "Starry, Starry Night."
It is always a treat when our aboriginal presenters come and cook bannock with our youngsters. Always great to see so many parents come and volunteer to help.
We are thankful to Mrs. Powell. She has been coming to the kindergarten classrooms and presenting lessons on self-regulation. Optimum learning happens when you are emotionally in the green zone!

On January 17th, Ida Yang from division 1 was one of two student performers at TEDxLangleyEd. This event was at the Chief Sepass theatre in Fort Langley. Ida "wowed" the audience with her wonderful performance. Everyone was astounded by her playing.
On January 19th, Kindergarten registration started in the Langley school district. We are again anticipating a large number of young people to come to our school in September. In order to be guaranteed a spot in Kindergarten, children have to be registered by March 31st.

For the next few weeks, Mrs. Lenko will be teaching divisions 1, 2 and 3 about Reading Power. I think it's important that Principals also teach because it is a great way to get to know the students in the school.
Ready Set Learn is also happening for the next four session. This is a free program for children who are entering Kindergarten in September. There is still room if you want to register your child. Just phone the office.

Thanks to our parents who came on Wed. Jan. 21 and made popcorn for the school. This is a very popular snack with students and adults.
Way to go Division three. Your posters on your math surveys are astounding. Great way to show your learning.
Another great couple of days of learning at Richard Bulpitt Elementary School.
