5. Mrs. Barr's mother donated a beautiful ginger bread house to the school. Raffle tickets were sold with the proceeds going to the family whose little one is in Seattle undergoing cancer treatment. During the craft fair, the winning ticket was pulled and one of our students was able to take the house home. |
1. The last two weeks have been extremely busy at Richard Bulpitt Elementary School. We have had three elves join us in different primary classrooms. One "Marshmallow" is extremely mischievous and leaves a huge mess every night. The one in Ms. Mcleod's classroom is relatively quiet and just hangs around. The elf in Mrs. Muuren's classroom arrived in the middle of a snowstorm. He is a daredevil and likes to zipline and hang from the projector screen. Students in all three classrooms can not wait to come to school and see what their classroom elf has been up to that night. We can't wait to see what these three will pull off the last week of school before Christmas holidays. 2. It's not all about Christmas. We had a dentist come and present to our grade ones about proper dental hygiene and how to look after your teeth and gums. Proper brushing and flossing are some of the key points covered. Many of our little ones are losing teeth on a daily basis, so it is important that they know how to look after their teeth. 3. A great way to learn to write in Mrs. Friessen's classroom. We are also so happy to have our parents come and help us out in the kitchen. Lots of gingerbread men are running around this week. 4. There is a lot of learning that continues even when report cards are finished and we are in the Christmas season. Mr. Gage came to visit one day and stayed to help read with the youngsters in grades one and two, also other grade one students were learning the story of how to kiss a frog. 6. The presentation from Michael Bortollo was inspirational and educational. He spoke about including everyone even if they were different, to treat everyone with respect, kindness and friendliness, and to not judge someone by how they may seem. Michael spoke to all of our students and he geared his presentation for all age levels. 7. Our christmas concert was a huge success. Both afternoon and evening performances were well attended. Thanks to staff, students and Mrs. Merkel for all your hard work. We also collected food for the food bank which will be picked up next week. 8. Way to go Bulldogs! You accepted the challenge from Willoughby Town Center to build gingerbread houses for their contest. We think our were the best but we are still waiting for the results. 9. Our Richard Bulpitt Choir sang amazingly well at the Willoughby Town Centre Christmas Festival. It was great to see so many students and families come out on Saturday and represent RBES. Another super week at Richard Bulpitt Elementary School.

1. On November 17th we had the Dream-rider theatre team come and perform at Richard Bulpitt. The productions are about taking care of our planet and cover topics such as recycling, reducing, litter-less lunches and taking care of our environment. The Township of Langley sponsors these plays and we are always grateful when they come to our school. 2. In our Learning Commons, our teacher librarian has collected all the awesome things that we can be! At Richard Bulpitt Elementary you an be anything you want. 3. Buddy Reading is a great way to share a favourite book! We are also happy to have Mr. Flack teach chess to the grade three, fours and fives! 4. During our last collaboration and inquiry day, teachers had the opportunity to go much deeper with their learning. Brainstorming techniques were used to explore topics. Mrs. Lenko loves it when she is featured in a book that a student has written. 5. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Our grade five classes are practising their Christmas Concert Songs in the multi-purpose room in preparation for the Christmas Concert. Thanks Mrs. Merkle and Mr. Kernanen for your hard work in this. 6. A proud moment for Yorkson Middle School. They officially opened on November 28th. The third brand new school on the Willoughby slope. 7. Jersey day was a lot of fun! Many classes wore their team jerseys, their favourite teams or their Richard Bulpitt spirit wear! 8. Love these owls in the hallway! Mrs. Barr did an exceptionally nice job with these individual Owls. Another great week of learning at Richard Bulpitt Elementary school. 1. On Wednesday our students were treated to popcorn from our wonderful Parent Advisory Committee. Students who have not pre-ordered for the next popcorn sale can bring their loonies to school as popcorn will be sold at recess. Our music classes serenaded our parents with "The Popcorn" song. Thanks to Mrs. Merkel for her fast thinking and having this song available. 2. Welcome to the Mobile Dairy Classroom who came to visit Richard Bupitt on Friday morning. Children were excited to see the grown-up dairy cow as well as her small calf. The calf was one week old. The large cow weighed over 1500 pounds. The classroom had to leave early because the milk machine was frozen and therefore the older cow could not be milked. They have promised that they will return in the Spring and stay the whole morning. 3. Students in division three were working with a different type of COWS. These are our laptops or our computers on wheels. Students use the COWS for many different parts of their learning. Often they work in pairs or alone. Division three is also producing an imaginative book by hand. This includes illustrations and a written story. 4. The students in Division seven were working on their super flex powers. These powers give them control over their regulation and emotions. Well done Bulpitt Bulldogs!! Another awesome week. 1. It is awesome to see our kindergarten students learn their alphabet letters. Individual whiteboards and markers with an old sock as an eraser work very well for practising printing. Some students like to sit on the floor, some students "sprawl" on the floor. It is important to realize that all of our learners are different and at different stages of their educational journey. Since we are now at the end of week six of school, our kindergarten students are settling into routine and learning how school works. It is a big change for some of our littlest students. 2. Our grade one students also like to use the whiteboards. Our students are learning to put the letters together to make words and sentences. Whiteboards are easy to use because you can erase them forever without making a hole in your paper. Again developmentally some students in grade one still need practise with the individual letters, some students are learning words and stringing the letters together, some students are creating sentences that are meaningful. The primary curriculum allows students to progress at their own rate. It is amazing to see the growth of tees youngsters as they mature in their self-regulation skills and developmental levels. 3. Thanks to Mrs. Friesen (one of our PAC Moms) who volunteered to go to primary classes and teach students the proper way to wash your hands. After hand washing, students then held their hands under the "blue" light to see if all the "germs" had been washed off. During the cold and flu season, it is extremely important that all of us follow proper hand washing techniques. With almost 400 children in the building, it is very easy for germs to spread quickly. If your youngster(s) is sick, please keep them at home until they are well. Please do not share your cold or flu with others. When a child is sick in the classroom, the custodians do an extra "deep clean" that night. We are all trying to stay healthy until Christmas holidays. 4. We had an extremely successful Scholastic Book fair this past week. The book fair sold over $5200.00 worth of books and items. Students and parents are very generous in our community. Students loved seeing the new titles and were eager to scoop up new graphic novels, chapter books and early reading books. Also popular were the bookmarks, posters and craft books. The school benefits form these sales because Scholastic shares the profit. Which means Richard Bulpitt will be able to buy more books for its Learning Commons. Last year we also had a book fair in the Spring. It was also well attended. Stay tuned for news on books! Thanks everyone for supporting the book fair! 5. Country Bumkins Daycare and pre-school always have some fun activities happening. The other day students were dipping their car wheels into different colour paint. Then on a large sheet of white paper, they "drove" tracks and designs everywhere. I had never seen this method of painting. Afterwards all the cars went to the "car-wash". Their wheels were scrubbed and cars were ready for another day of play. 6. There were lots of wonderful things on display in the halls having to do with Remembrance Day. The kindergarten classes made their kindness recipes, and division 1 and 2 created beautiful pastel coloured poppies.
1. On Monday October 27th, RBES staff had their first collaboration session. All staff met in the library at 8:30am and were led through a series of exercises by Ms. Macdonald. The focus of our collaboration sessions is based on forming a question that will improve our teaching practise through the process of inquiry. Studies have shown that when teaching practice improves, so does student achievement. For the first part of the session, we learned about what inquiry was and how it's not always easy to formulate a question. The second part of the session had groups brainstorming about some of the factors around the process of inquiry. At the end, we all tried to begin to formulate a question that we could begin to work with. Hard work! Good for the adults to learn what the students go through. 2. On Tuesday morning, we have Kindergarten PE with Ms. Macdonald in the gym. In this photo, the children were playing musical hola-hoops. When the music stopped, everyone had to run into a hoop. Luckily there were lots of hoops so no-one was ever without a spot to be in. It is very important that students have physical activity every day. With the rainy season here, we try to send the children out even if it is wet, but sometimes when the rain is just too heavy we do call an "in" day. That's when we try to make sure that lots of steam is run off in the gym. 3. Ms. Friesen took the opportunity to do some reading with one of her students. It is great to see adults and children read anywhere in the school. Whether it is on the floor, in a desk, in the learning commons or in the hall. Reading is one of those activities you can do anywhere. 4. We have had lots of pumpkins in the school all week. Students have been weighing, measuring, scooping, and eating pumpkin seeds for the past two weeks. Division 2 and 3 carved class sets of pumpkins. I am sure they looked fantastic on Halloween night.
6. Way to go Mrs. Muuren for completing your half marathon this weekend! We are all very proud of you! Go Bulldogs go! 1. Division 4 loved "The Book With No Pictures." Lots of laughter as this story was read to them. Afterwards, many of the students borrowed the book from Mrs. Lenko and read it to their classmates. Just goes to prove that this book needs no pictures to be engaging with students of all ages. 3. This week it was pumpkins, pumpkins everywhere. Thanks so much to the parents who came into classes to help with the pumpkin activities. Students, measured, counted, cooked and carved pumpkins. On Thursday, Enn's farms delivered close to 200 pumpkins to our school. The back fields became our own private pumpkin patch. Parents came and unloaded the truck and then placed the pumpkins in the back field. Students were able to come out and choose their pumpkin. The only thing was they had to be able to carry it back to their classroom.
5. On Friday, students stayed home while staff went back to school. Mr. Keranen and Mr. Kroeker attended a day long workshop given by Alan November. The event was held at the Langley Golf Center. Other staff members participated in self-directed activities and the kindergarten conference at Brookswood. It is important for staff to continue to model their learning as well. It was another great week at Richard Bulpitt Elementary School. 1. There was lots of excitement in division 9 this week. Students measured and evaluated a variety of different pumpkins. There was weighing, cutting, measuring and cooking happening in all of the centres. Students were very interested to see the shapes, sixes and seeds of the pumpkins they explored. Hands on learning! 2. In our division two intermediate classroom, we had a directed drawing lesson from Mr. Keranen. Students learned where to place the eyes, the nose, the ears and other facial details. There are some budding artists in this class! 3. Mrs. Merkel is teaching Remembrance day songs to all of our students. Students go to the Multi-purpose room for music. Recorders, choral and rhythm will be taught to different grades this term. There is also a lunch hour choir on Wednesdays for any intermediate student who wishes to join. 4. Our intermediate students love to play dodgeball. Our large gym is perfect for group games that involve more than one division. Check out the Township of Langley programs for after school and on the weekends. Drop-in badminton is very popular. We also use our gym for staff on Wednesday after school and for Dad's basketball on Friday night. 5. Thanks to the grandparent who donated apples to our school from their garden. This week kindergarten and daycare have used our kitchen to make apple sauce with children. The children love it when their Moms come into help. We appreciate our volunteers as well as the folks who donate items like apples to our school. Another wonderful week with our Bulldogs and a timely reminder that we are also thankful for the things that are given to us! Way to go Bulldogs! 1. This week classes met our RCMP Liaison officer Constable Vonna Fitzgerald. Cst. Vonna visits RBES regularly. She represents one of our community helpers. She also assists teachers in providing information on bike safety, drug awareness and stranger danger. Students always ask her about the "tools" on her tool belt and whether she has arrested people. Cst. Vonna is always available to assist the school whether it is for educational purposes or to give advice on how to keep our children safe. She is a welcome addition to our team. 2. All week our youngest students have been busy creating masterpieces for Thanksgiving. The hall bulletin boards are showcasing turkeys, cornucopias, corn stalks, pumpkin patches and scarecrows. Literacy activities revolved around Fall, apples, corn, pumpkins and turkeys. Well done to our Kindergarten Bulldogs! 3. Love this turkey tree! Who knew that you could find turkeys in an apple tree. Just a cute example of the art in the halls. 4. Our grade twos are hard at work. Teachers are making sure students are back into routine and schedules. It is amazing how fast students learn the expectations of the individual classrooms. We are hearing lots of stories about children being tired when they come home. This is not unusual for youngsters. Make sure they get lots of downtime after school and a chance to relax for a while before moving to the next activity. 5. Ms. Davies has been very busy in the office. Agendas, school supplies, verification forms, registrations, office supplies, keys and keeping students, parents and teachers happy. Not an easy job! Way to go Ms. Davies, you are the best Bulpitt Bulldog this week! Happy Thanksgiving Everyone! 2. Divison 2 has been creating posters about safety on the playground. We have had many new students start at Richard Bulpitt this year. We have been reviewing the Safety Rules with everyone. These include:
3. Our division 1 students were building structures last week as part of a science unit. Marshmallows and straws soon became buildings and skyscrapers. Well done grade fives! 4. Our kindergarten classes have been learning how to write and spell their names. All over the school, beautiful bulletin boards are appearing filled with creations from our students. Love the colourful masterpieces! 5. Grade one students are busy completing apples and Fall for September. Hard to believe that October is now here. Thanksgiving, pumpkins, turkeys and Halloween are just around the corner. It has been a great week at Richard Bulpitt. Way to go Bulldogs!! |
